China is working towards 100% renewable power at its Antarctic bases by 2035

3 August 2026 | Qinling Station, Terra Nova Bay, Antarctica | South China Morning Post

China is working toward supplying all of its Antarctic research stations with renewable energy by 2035. Qinling Station, which opened in 2024, was reported to meet more than 60% of its energy demand through a hybrid system combining wind, solar, hydrogen and battery storage. Hydrogen adds longer-duration storage and dispatchable electricity to a station that must operate through extreme cold, high winds and months of darkness. The performance figure is based on reporting from Chinese programme representatives, and the pathway from Qinling's current system to fully renewable operation across every Chinese base remains a forward-looking target.

Hyundai Motor to build green hydrogen power system at Antarctic research station

18 June 2026 | South Korean Antarctic research stations | The Korea Times

Hyundai Motor Group signed a memorandum of understanding with South Korea's Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries and the Korea Polar Research Institute to develop a clean-hydrogen energy system for Antarctic research operations. The proposed microgrid would use surplus solar electricity for water electrolysis, store the resulting hydrogen and convert it back to electricity through fuel cells when solar generation is unavailable. The design is intended to reduce reliance on imported diesel while testing Hyundai's hydrogen technology in an isolated environment with no external grid. Because the agreement is an early development commitment, the report did not yet establish the installation site, capacity, commissioning date, budget or independently verified emissions reduction.

Hybrid solar-hydrogen project planned at Antarctic base

17 June 2026 | Professor Julio Escudero Scientific Base, King George Island, Antarctica | pv magazine Australia

A Chilean-European pilot at the Professor Julio Escudero Scientific Base is being developed to test a hybrid solar, battery and hydrogen-fuel-cell system under Antarctic conditions. The pre-feasibility concept includes 27 kW of photovoltaic capacity, an electrolyser producing approximately 1 kg of hydrogen per day and gaseous storage between 30 and 40 bar. Stored hydrogen would supply PEM fuel cells capable of delivering 30 kW of laboratory backup power for up to two hours per month, with extensive leak detection, ventilation and emergency-shutdown equipment. The specifications remain conceptual and the project still requires detailed engineering, procurement, installation and operating evidence before its diesel-saving performance can be confirmed.
